What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from your weight and height. It provides a simple indicator of whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

BMI Categories:

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
  • 25.0 - 29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0 and above: Obesity

Note: BMI is a general indicator and does not account for muscle mass, bone density, and other factors. For a more comprehensive health assessment, consult with a healthcare professional.

Understanding BMI

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.

BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

BMI Categories

BMI Range Weight Category Health Risk
Below 18.5 Underweight Increased risk for some health issues
18.5 - 24.9 Normal weight Lowest risk for health issues
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight Increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure
30.0 - 34.9 Obesity (Class 1) High risk for health issues
35.0 - 39.9 Obesity (Class 2) Very high risk for health issues
40.0 and above Obesity (Class 3) Extremely high risk for health issues

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful tool, it does have limitations. It doesn't distinguish between weight from muscle and weight from fat. As a result:

  • Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without health risks
  • Older adults who have lost muscle mass may have a "normal" BMI despite having excess fat
  • BMI doesn't account for where fat is stored in the body (abdominal fat carries more health risks)
  • BMI ranges may need adjustment for different ethnic groups

For the most accurate health assessment, BMI should be used alongside other measurements like waist circumference, blood tests, and consultations with healthcare professionals.
